Billy Kinard, former Mississippi coach, dies at 84

Billy Kinard, who experienced immediate success as the University of Mississippi coach but faded from the scene almost as quickly, has died. He was 84.The school said Monday that Kinard, who was dealing with an extended illness, died at his home in Fort Payne in northeastern Alabama.Kinard, previously an assistant coach at Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Arkansas, was the first Ole Miss alumnus to be the school’s football coach. His older brother, Frank Kinard, was named athletic director and hired Billy Kinard to succeed the coach he played for, Johnny Vaught, who suffered a heart attack in 1970.In 1971, Kinard led the Rebels to a 10-2 record. In the Peach Bowl, Ole Miss crushed Georgia Tech, 41-18.The Rebels fell back to 5-5 the next season, and when the team started the 1973 season with a 1-2 record, Vaught came out of retirement to resume head coaching duties.
