The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas works to keep families close by providing a comfortable and conveniently located home for parents and loved ones who have children receiving medical care at local hospitals.  In 2017, 156 families stayed a total of 1,543 nights in the Topeka House. These families traveled to Topeka from 28 Kansas counties and 13 other states for their children’s medical care.  The average family stay was 10 days; however, some families stayed longer than 90 days in order to be close to their hospitalized children.  Unless families have the means to pay for long-term hotel lodging, without the Ronald McDonald House families would either have to stay in a hospital waiting room or their vehicle.  Consistently, less than 25-percent of the families are able to provide a donation for their stay, which is why these charity fundraisers are an essential and fun way to fulfill their mission.
